North Korea threatens to cancel the summit with the United States
On Wednesday, the North Korean authorities reported that the summit between President Kim Jong-un and his US counterpart Donald Trump is at risk. In addition, according to the South Korean agency Yonhap, it canceled the high-level inter-Korean dialogue. The measure was adopted before the Max Thunder military exercises between the air forces of South Korea and the US which are an essay for the invasion of the north and "a provocation" in this context.
High-level talks between envoys from Pyongyang and Seoul on Wednesday were also suspended because of those exercises, Yonhap said. The meeting was the latest in a series of measures taken by North Korea that have fanned hopes that the seven-decade conflict on the Korean Peninsula could come to an end. The meeting between the delegations of the two Koreas was to take place on the south side of the village of Panmunjom, where the first meeting between the two heads of state was held less than a month ago. The news of this Wednesday has a global impact. It is that the summit between Kim Jong-un and the president of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, on April 27 was an unprecedented event in recent history. It was the third meeting between leaders of both countries in seven decades. It was also the first on the south side of the border, since the previous ones had been carried out in the North Korean capital.
The most significant data of that day was the agreement between both countries to finalize a declaration of definitive peace. Is that after the war that divided the peninsula and lasted from 1950 to 1953, what was signed was an armistice. That is, formally, both States were still at war. Other points were also addressed as a plan to advance the denuclearization of North Korea as well as the construction of a railroad linking both territories. Pyongyang has scheduled the dismantling of its nuclear bomb test site between May 23 and 25 to fulfill the promise to suspend its atomic tests, state media reported on Saturday, a month before a scheduled summit in Singapore between North Korea and the United States.
After that meeting, they began talking about a meeting between the North Korean leader and Donald Trump. The summit between the two countries is scheduled for June 12 in Singapore, a scenario that seemed unlikely given the insults and threats exchanged between the two leaders in the past year. Before the official announcement, North Korea freed three American political prisoners. However, after the announcement on Wednesday, the future of that exchange has been suspended.
